Pilocarpine is a parasympathomimetic drug which stimulates the cholinergic receptors. When applied topically pilocarpine produces constriction,stimutates the ciliary muscles and increase aqueous humor outflow facility. With the increase in outflow facility, there is a decrease in intraocular pressure (IOP). Miosis following topical application lasts 4-6 hours depending on th concentration of the solution. Pilocarpine may be used in compination with other miotics , beta blockers, carbonic anhydrates inhibitors, sympathomimetic agents.
It is indicated in simple open-angle glaucoma, angle-closure glaucoma,chronic and acute.To achieve miosis, after mydriasis caused by mydriatic agents.
